Rumors about the upcoming Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold are sparking concern among the company’s fans. It was expected that the camera of the foldable smartphone would see significant improvements over the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, but recent leaks suggest the opposite. According to insiders, the main camera will remain 50 megapixels, the same as the budget Pixel 9a, while the ultrawide and telephoto lenses will remain unchanged from last year. This raises questions: why is the most expensive smartphone in Google’s lineup, priced at $1800, not getting a flagship-level camera like the Pixel 9 Pro?
Pixel 9 Pro Fold already lagged in camera quality compared to its “non-foldable” counterparts — for example, it featured a 10.8-megapixel telephoto lens compared to the 48-megapixel lens of the Pixel 9 Pro. By comparison, competitors like Oppo Find N5 offer powerful triple cameras with periscopic zoom of 3-3.5x. Google appears to be compromising again, although its computational photography — the use of AI for photo processing — is considered one of the best globally.
Fans had hoped the Pixel 10 Pro Fold would address this gap, especially considering its price and premium status. However, if the rumors are accurate, Google risks falling behind Samsung and other brands that are already improving the cameras in their foldable models, like the Galaxy Z Fold 6.
