PSIQUANTUM announced plans to build in Chicago one of the world’s first industrial -level quantum computers. The project worth $ 1 billion starts in 2025, and the launch of the system is scheduled for 2028.
Unlike other developers, PSIQUANTUM does not bet on demonstration models. The company is aimed at creating a full -fledged computer with a million cubes that can solve practical problems. As the basis for cubes, photons – light particles are used, which allows reducing the noise and cooling requirements.
The computer will be located on the territory of the former steel plant, where the Illinois authorities plan to create a scientific park. The state allocated $ 500 million to this project, of which $ 200 million will go to the construction of installations for the production of liquid helium – necessary for cooling the system. A quantum laboratory under the auspices of DARPA and the new IBM center will also appear on the site.
PSIQUANTUM is already testing intermediate systems in the UK and Stanford, and larger assemblies are planned in Chicago and Australia. Despite the difficulties, the company is sure that they will be able to cope with engineering challenges related to scaling.
