Scientists of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (Aania) discovered the remains of ancient whales on the island of Vilchek (the Earth of Franz Joseph), where the glacier is rapidly retreating.
In the place that until recently was covered with ice, the sea terrace appeared – a land plot, where the researchers found many well -preserved bones of whales. As a researcher at Aanias Nikita Demidov said, according to satellite images, it was possible to find out that the glacier has significantly reduced and divided into two parts over the past 20 years. This gave scientists access to new territories.
Interestingly, the best preserved remains were closer to the glacier itself. Scientists believe that such finds can talk about sharp changes in sea level that have occurred in this region in the past few thousand years.
In addition, the expedition studied the features of the seasonal melting of ice and planned the drilling of wells for temperature research on the capacity of desires (New Earth).
