Scientists from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Kentucky have developed an experimental drug for weight loss, which, unlike popular means like Ozempic and Wegovy, does not cause nausea and vomiting.
These drugs usually act due to the GLP-1 hormone, which regulates the appetite and blood sugar, but often cause unpleasant side effects. A new approach is based on ODN protein, which is produced in the brain with special cells – gli. Researchers suggest that, acting on ODN, you can control the feeling of hunger without causing side effects.
In experiments on rats and mice, scientists used the ODN derivative – a substance called TDN. The results were promising: the animals lost weight, they improved the blood sugar, while neither nausea nor other negative effects were observed. Even at the shocks, which are often used to assess the reaction to motion sickness, there was no vomiting.
So far, these are only the first trials, but scientists hope to start clinical research in public for two years.
