In July 2025, Chinese scientists conducted a successful experiment: they transferred data from the Earth satellite using a laser with a capacity of only 2 watts. Communication was carried out from a geostationary orbit – at an altitude of 36,000 km – and reached a speed of 1 Gbit/s. This is five times faster than the usual Internet from Starlink satellites.
Despite rumors, Starlink satellites were not injured. The experiment was peaceful and aimed only at checking new communication technologies, and not at military use.
To achieve such a result, Chinese engineers used a special optics system that compensates for atmospheric interference. This made it possible to transmit a signal with high speed even at such a large distance.
Although the test itself was scientific, experts note: such laser technologies can be used for military purposes.
