In Italy, the Assistant was created to assess the risk of landslides

30.07.2025

In Italy, they presented a new digital assistant based on artificial intelligence (AI), who will help citizens evaluate the risk of landslides in their region. The development of the State Environmental Protection and Research Institute is engaged in the development. The assistant will become part of the IDROGEO platform, where cards and current data on soil instability are placed.

According to the institute, more than a million people in Italy live in zones with a high or very high risk of landslides. In recent years, such threats have been intensified due to climatic changes that make storms more often and stronger. This, in turn, increases the likelihood of soil gatherings and floods, affecting even those areas that were previously considered safe.

The analysis shows that over two years, the share of territories exposed to serious risk of landslides increased from 8.7% to 9.5%. This means that about 2.2% of the population, that is, about 1.3 million people, are at risk.
