Scientists: Meteorite rain awaits the earth in the event of a collision of asteroid and moon

01.08.2025

Asteroid 2024 YR4, which is comparable in size with a 15-story building, may encounter the moon in 2032. About this with reference to the study of the University of Western Ontario and the University of Atabaska in Canada told the New York Post.

The probability of a clash of Earth’s satellite and asteroid is about 96%, and the consequences for the moon, astronauts and spacecraft will be serious. The study is based on data obtained using the James Webb space telescope and mathematical modeling.

The diameter of the asteroid is up to 220 feet (67 meters), and the collision will lead to the formation of a crater with a diameter of more than half a mile – 804.5 meters. The collision will pose a threat to satellites in a low near -earth orbit for several days or months.

The lunar garbage formed as a result of this accident can cause meteorite rain above the ground. Also, the fall of an asteroid on the moon can create problems for satellite communications operators due to the large size of the radiation of satellites. In addition, the material thrown from the moon may be dangerous for spacecraft around the moon and on its surface.
