The Macrumors portal with reference to the South Korean branch of The Elec said that Apple plans to use the so -called Tandem OLED panels in future iPhone. This will improve the characteristics of displays, but such panels are so far available only in iPad Pro models.
Tandem OLED technology has been developed by one of Apple suppliers, LG. The essence of the technology is the use of a multi-layer RGB model, diodes work as one-“in tandem”. It is known that Apple has developed a production plan for two years in advance, but it has not yet been decided whether the customer will cooperate with the Samsung Display or LG Display. In this regard, the appearance on the iPhone market with tandem OLED displays is expected no earlier than 2028.
It is also known that for iPhones, Apple is developing a simplified version, where the blue subpixel will be on two layers, and red and green on one. This is the proposal of LG Display, which can introduce a simplified tandem technology. LG already supplies two-layer tandem panels for the iPad Pro and produces automobile OLED displays with this technology, while Samsung uses a single-layer one.
Apple will probably cooperate with several suppliers, including the Chinese BOE in order to ensure production capacity and competitiveness. However, company plans may change.
