The Ministry of Internal Affairs warned of fraud with fake QR codes

10.08.2025

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported a new scheme for fraud with QR codes. Attackers place fake codes in public places. When a person scans such a QR code, he thinks that he switches to a promotion or discount, but in fact the money is transferred directly to fraudsters.

In order not to fall into a trap, the Ministry of Internal Affairs is advised to carefully check where the QR code came from, and not scan suspicious codes. Also, do not enter personal and banking data without need and download applications only through official stores, and not by links from QR codes.

In addition, the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to combat cybercrime warned about scammers who send fake letters on behalf of the State traffic inspectorate. In such letters, victims are asked to pay a fine for violation of traffic rules, while scammers receive bank cards or set malware for devices.
