Foxconn announced plans for the joint production of equipment for Data centers with the Japanese SoftBank company in the former factory for the production of electric vehicles in Ohio. The production site located in the city of Lordstown was previously redeemed by SoftBank, but Foxconn will continue to work on it through a joint venture, which will be created between two companies.
The sale of enterprises and equipment worth $ 375 million was agreed earlier this month. The new owner was not officially called, but Foxconn representatives confirmed that SoftBank became this buyer.
The project will be implemented as part of the Stargate initiative, which is a joint company SoftBank, Openai and Oracle. Consortium sets a goal to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence in the United States and create the necessary infrastructure for processing large amounts of data. The initiative was announced at the beginning of the year, then representatives of the US administration reported that the total investment in the project could reach $ 500 billion.
Foxconn noted that working preparation for the launch of production began more than six months ago. According to the company’s management, when choosing a region for the placement of the production base, factors such as the readiness of the site for launch, the availability of electricity and the possibility of the operational start of work were taken into account. Ohio was recognized as the most suitable place, and this choice was supported by SoftBank.
