Elon Musk again criticized the use of Lidar in autopilot systems, saying that such sensors are not only redundant, but also reduce safety.
According to him, the experience of Tesla showed: when these cameras do not coincide with the signals of Lidar or radar, a “conflict of perception” arises. As a result, the algorithm has to decide which source is considered more reliable, which increases the risk of errors.
Musk emphasized that it was the rejection of radars and the transition to a completely visual system that allowed Tesla to improve the work of the autopilot. He also noted that Waymo is still faced with difficulties on the tracks precisely because of the differences between the sensors.
“Cameras are the only way,” Musk said, recalling that Tesla relies on computer vision and actively develops the FSD system.
In the USA, Tesla pilot robotaxi in Ostin and San Francisco has already been launched, where they work exclusively on the basis of visual navigation.
