China became the first large country, where sales of electric vehicles exceeded half the market of new cars. According to the Chinese Association of automakers (CAAM), not so long ago, electric cars occupied 51% of sales and hold this share for five consecutive months.
The world production of electric cars in 2024 amounted to about 17 million units, of which 12 million were released in China. Most – about 11 million – was sold in the domestic market, the rest was exported.
The segment of pure electric vehicles (BEV), which work only on the battery, is especially rapidly growing. They already occupy 31% of the total market of cars in the country. The rest is in hybrid models (PHEV).
Experts call 50% “point of no return” for the industry. So, in Norway, electric cars reached this mark in 2020, and by 2024 their share increased to 90%. What can soon be expected in China.
