Prime Minister Taiwan Cho Jun-Tai said that TSMC will never become an American company. According to him, investments in the United States will not change the company’s belonging, and there is no talk of transferring a share to the American government.
These words sounded against the background of rumors about a possible transaction between the administration of Donald Trump and TSMC, which involves the participation of the United States in the capital of the corporation. In the Taiwanese media, the discussion caused dissatisfaction, as there were versions about an attempt to turn the largest manufacturer of chips into an “American factory”. However, TSMC itself emphasized that they did not receive such an offer.
The company has already invested about 165 billion dollars in American projects, and earlier estimates of up to 300 billion sounded. Nevertheless, according to the prime minister, these investments do not mean transferring key technologies and do not give the United States direct access to development.
Taiwanese official also noted that the government does not interfere in the solutions of TSMC and other local firms regarding investment abroad. Decisions on the construction of factories or the production of certain technologies are adopted by the companies themselves.
