Apple was accused of violating patents on Hey Siri

06.09.2025

Ceres, a former part of Nuance Communications, filed a lawsuit against Apple in the United States, accusing her of violating several patents. Cerese works with voice control technologies and virtual interfaces, including cars.

According to the claim filed in the Western District of Texas, Cerese in 2021 offered Apple to purchase or licensed a number of her patents related to virtual keyboards and the activation of the Hey Siri vocal assistant. The discussions were held, but there was no agreement.

Among the controversial patents:

  • Systems recognition of words by a virtual keyboard.

  • Function “Sliding input” on the keyboard.

  • System tracking the indicator movements for entering the text.

  • Methods Improvements to input text on abbreviated keyboards.

  • Methods recognition of voice commands for low energy consumption.

CERENCE requires the court to recognize patent violations, forbid Apple to use these technologies without a license and obliged to pay fines and licensing deductions, including future payments. The company also requested a jury.
