In 2021, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 7th as World Cotton Day. This date is widely celebrated internationally to honor the labor of cotton growers, highlight the importance of this “white gold” in our lives, and draw attention to the sustainable development of the sector.
Cotton holds a vital place in the global economy. As the primary raw material for the textile industry, it also supports the labor, livelihood, and growth of millions of people. In Turkmenistan, cotton symbolizes our nation’s economic strength and the diligence of our people. Since independence, large-scale efforts have been undertaken to improve the cotton industry, increase agricultural productivity, and implement water-saving technologies. Every year, Turkmen cotton growers achieve high yields, contributing to the economic development of our homeland with their “white gold.”
World Cotton Day reminds us that cotton is born from pure nature, labor, sunlight, and soil. Therefore, this day is also seen as a call to the global community to embrace environmentally friendly production and show respect for nature.
