On November 14, 2024, representatives of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan participated in the 7th parliamentary meeting of the «Turkmenistan- European Union» held in Brussels, Kingdom of Belgium.
At the parliamentary session, the Turkmen side presented the key areas of Turkmenistan’s humanitarian foreign policy, which successfully implements an “Open Door” policy, as well as the legislative activities of the Mejlis.
During the meeting, it was noted that the Mejlis of Turkmenistan is as member of both the Inter-parliamentary Union and Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE, actively engaging in events organized within these parliamentary platforms. Additionally, it was emphasized that the Mejlis hosts 15 bilateral parliamentary friendship groups with the parliaments of EU member states, and that active cooperation is being fostered between the relevant committees and friendship groups.
It was highlighted that Turkmenistan, which is emerging as a driving force of the Great Silk Road, holds a strategically advantageous position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, offering immense potential for the long-term development of political-diplomatic, trade-economic, and cultural-humanitarian ties between regions.
The importance of the growing dynamism of parliamentary cooperation was specifically emphasized at the international conference titled “30 Years of Cooperation between Turkmenistan and the European Union: Joint Efforts for the Future,” held in Ashgabat on May 14, 2024.
Additionally, discussions were held on the development of parliamentary relations between Turkmenistan and the European Union, focusing on ensuring peace and security, protecting the environment, and implementing connectivity, transport, and infrastructure projects.
The comprehensive measures being implemented in Turkmenistan with the involvement of the European Union to modernize the education system, digitalize educational programs, and train skilled professionals were highly praised.
The meeting reviewed parliamentary cooperation between Turkmenistan and the European Union, reaffirming Turkmenistan’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the EU. The discussion also highlighted the crucial role of parliamentary dialogue in promoting sustainable development and peace.
