When Panoramic iDrive is installed, the standard instrument panel is replaced with a panel that projects data onto the windshield. The driver has access to various informative elements, including speed, driver assistance information, traffic lights, road signs, navigation directions, and battery charge level. All information can be customized according to the driver’s preferences.
Navigation information is also highlighted in green to emphasize the activation of the driver assistance system. This system is described as “an augmented reality layer that helps the driver connect with the road.”
In its statement, BMW said that integrating navigation instructions with driver assistance data is a natural step with the development of higher levels of autonomous driving. The company also took customer feedback into account when developing the windshield display functions. Additionally, BMW redesigned the steering wheel and added tactile buttons that display various settings.
