BAR Technologies has designed innovative sails for ships. Their peculiarity lies in their ability to make ships environmentally friendly and maritime cargo transportation more affordable.
A similar sail has already been installed and tested on the Pyxis Ocean. The test, during which the Indian and Pacific oceans, North and South Atlantic were crossed, showed the viability of the idea.
The sails, made of fiberglass and steel, are automated. They rise above the deck by 37.5 meters.
The goal is not to force the ship to move due to the force of the wind, but, when the wind is favorable, to reduce the load on the standard diesel engines. Thanks to this, you can save up to 3 tons of diesel fuel per day.
As BAR Technologies CEO John Cooper notes, installing such sails on cargo ships will help reduce toxic emissions. Thus, according to calculations, equipping a typical cargo ship with three sails will reduce emissions by one and a half times.
