In its statement, Google argues that the requirement for a “radical overhaul” of the Play Store and the Android operating system will negatively impact both app developers and consumers. The company stated that the changes could worsen the market situation and make it harder to access apps.
Epic Games, on the other hand, called Google’s appeal “baseless” and an attempt to avoid complying with the jury’s decision. According to Epic, the court rejected the arguments that Google is now repeating.
The essence of the case is Epic Games’ accusation that Google monopolizes the market for app distribution on Android devices and in-app payment methods. In 2020, Epic filed a lawsuit claiming that Google unlawfully suppresses competition, and last year the jury found the company’s actions to be in violation of the law.
In October, Judge James Donato issued an order requiring Google to allow users to download alternative app stores in Google Play and provide them access to the app catalog.
