Although Google publicly stated that it only works with civilian ministries, employees of its cloud division reportedly reached out directly to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) after the Hamas attack on October 7. According to documents, Google employees expedited the IDF’s requests for AI tools, fearing that Israel would choose Amazon if there were delays.
The collaboration occurred at a time when Google faced backlash over Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion cloud computing contract with Israel.
Employee protests against the project led to the dismissal of 28 workers, some of whom were arrested during strikes.
Google consistently denies that it works on military-related projects under Nimbus.
