The agreement covers the design, production, and maintenance of nuclear reactors used in the country’s submarine fleet, ensuring the “continuous operation of the UK’s nuclear deterrent forces.” These deterrent forces have been in operation since 1969, with at least one submarine equipped with nuclear warheads always on patrol.
The government claims that the contract will streamline previous agreements and save £400 million over eight years through more efficient production and cost management. Rolls-Royce will also expand its facilities in Derby, including an academy that trains 200 apprentices annually.
