Derya Soysal, a member of the Belgian institute Diplomatic World and an independent environmental expert specializing in the history and geography of Central Asia, spoke on Gold FM radio. Derya paid special attention to the historical context of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality, which was declared on December 12, 1995. She noted that the concept of neutrality has become a fundamental part of the country’s political culture, contributing to the strengthening of its national identity, the development of diplomatic and economic ties with other states, and Turkmenistan’s successful participation in resolving regional conflicts in the 1990s.
The expert also emphasized the international recognition of Turkmenistan, particularly highlighting the words of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who highly praised the country’s neutrality policy, its significant contribution to strengthening international relations, and its achievements in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals. In conclusion, Derya stressed that Turkmenistan’s neutrality policy, officially supported by the UN, remains an important tool for ensuring stability and security both in the region and globally.
