First Polar Bear Born in South America

28.02.2025

In the São Paulo Zoo (Brazil), the first polar bear born in South America was shown. It is a female named Nur. The cub was born on November 17, 2024, and has been in an artificial “den” with its mother since birth.

Nur’s parents are polar bears Aurora and Pilgrim, who were once brought from Russia and have been living in the Brazilian zoo for 10 years. The birth process was recorded on surveillance cameras. The footage shows the cub was born almost hairless.

After the birth, the mother licked the cub and placed it on herself to keep it warm. According to veterinarians, the first year of life, and especially the first hours, is a critical time for the survival of this species.

A team of veterinarians, along with Russian specialists, constantly monitored the cub and its mother during the first few months of its life.
