Meta*, led by Mark Zuckerberg, is planning to launch new smart glasses under the codename Hypernova, which could be priced at over $1000. Bloomberg reports, citing insiders, that these glasses promise to take augmented reality (AR) to the next level: a tiny display will appear on the right lens to show notifications, photos, or even routes from Google Maps. However, the high price and potential software issues raise questions about the project’s future.
Hypernova will retain the design of previous Ray-Ban Meta* glasses but will feature an improved camera for better-quality photos. Control will be managed via gestures and sensors on the frame. Still, experts highlight Meta‘s weakness in software. The Meta View app, which the glasses depend on, is limited to iOS and Android ecosystems, potentially causing inconvenience for users.
Zuckerberg has repeatedly expressed frustrations with integration challenges on external platforms, and if Hypernova fails to address this problem, it risks repeating the fate of previous unsuccessful smart glasses.
The release is expected this year, possibly at the Meta Connect* conference. Top-tier versions may be priced as high as $1300−1400.
