Dominica’s Volcanoes: A New Source of Green Energy

15.05.2025

Introduction The Caribbean island of Dominica is known for its rich natural resources. Its volcanoes, hot springs, and tropical forests provide excellent opportunities to develop sustainable energy sources. Dominica’s government aims to harness volcanic energy by building a geothermal power plant, reducing the country’s dependence on diesel generators and lowering electricity costs.

Harnessing Geothermal Energy Geothermal energy is generated by extracting heat from beneath the Earth’s surface. Dominica’s 10-megawatt geothermal plant will use steam from underground hot water reservoirs to drive turbines. The steam is then cooled and returned to the reservoir, making the process sustainable.

Economic and Environmental Impact This project will provide 66,000 Dominicans with clean energy and help reduce electricity prices. The government aims to phase out diesel generators entirely by 2030. Geothermal energy significantly reduces CO₂ emissions, aiding the island’s transition to cleaner energy. Additionally, Dominica will have the potential to export electricity to nearby islands.

Conclusion Dominica’s geothermal initiative is a crucial step toward sustainable development based on the island’s natural resources. It will not only minimize environmental impact but also positively influence the country’s economy.
