The California Federal Court allowed three authors to file a collective lawsuit against Anthropic, which is a competitor to Openai and is supported by Amazon. The lawsuit applies to the alleged copyright violation when using books for teaching artificial intelligence (AI).
The authors accuse Anthropic of mass download up to seven million copies of books from libraries with pirate content. In their opinion, the company violated the law, creating a multi -billion dollar business on the basis of other people’s works. Earlier in August last year, the same authors accused Anthropic of theft of hundreds of thousands of copyrighted books.
At the end of last month, the court supported Anthropic regarding the use of legally acquired books, recognizing this permissible within the framework of conscientious use, but noted the need for a separate proceeding about illegal sources.
