In recent months, Apple has noticed more than ten Iranians about trying to hack their iPhone using espionage software, security experts report. The organization of the Miaan Group and the Iranian researcher Hamid Kashfi said that these notifications were received by people associated with civilian activists in Iran and Europe.
According to experts, there were at least three waves of such attacks, and this is only a small part of what was happening. Some victims are afraid to continue the investigation due to fears for their security.
Since 2021, Apple warns users around the world about possible attacks by spy software created to survive state intelligence services, for example, PEGASUS from NSO Group. These notifications help researchers document cases of surveillance in different countries, including India and Thailand. For victims, Apple recommends contacting the Accessnow human rights group.
Apple did not comment on the situation with notifications for the Iranians.
