Specialists of the Geophysical Institute of the Vladikavkaz Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with colleagues from other regions of the North Caucasus, plan to develop seismic risk maps. These documents will allow the authorities to evaluate the possible consequences of strong earthquakes for cities and settlements in advance.
As explained by the supervisor of the institute Vladislav Zaalishvili, a recent powerful earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka again confirmed the need for such work. Maps will help predict the scale of destruction, economic damage and the potential number of victims.
First of all, scientists will update the seismic regulation cards for North Ossetia – Alania. The latest version of the document was created in 2008. Such cards require regular adjustment – about once every ten years.
In the future, similar cards will appear for other regions of the North Caucasus. Specialists from Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria and the Chechen Republic are working on the project.
