Google agreed with the American energy company Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) on the purchase of electricity from the future reactor, which is being built by the engineering company Kairos Power in OK Ridge, Tennessee. This is the first contract in the USA for the supply of energy from such technology.
The Hermes 2 reactor should earn by 2030 and provide electricity to the local network, to which the Google data centers in Tennessee and Alabama are connected. Kairos Power uses an unusual approach: instead of water, molten salt is used in its reactors.
Google plans to help Kairos Power enter up to 500 MW of new capacities by 2035. For comparison: now in the USA there are 94 reactors with a total capacity of about 97 thousand MW. Hermes 2 will give 50 MW.
In addition to electricity, Google will receive the so -called “pure energy certificates” confirming that the company uses energy without carbon emissions.
