US National Intelligence Director Tulsey Gabbard said that the UK authorities have abandoned the requirement of Apple to provide a Backdor to access the encrypted information of American users. According to her, the decision was the result of long-term consultations between Washington and London, in which President Donald Trump and Vice President Jay Di Wence also participated.
Earlier this year, the British government introduced an order obliging Apple to create a technical opportunity to access encrypted user data. In the USA, it was noted that such a requirement violates bilateral agreements, including Cloud ACT, which prohibits one country to demand access to data from citizens of the other party without the relevant procedures.
Apple adheres to a strict policy to protect user data and stated that it would not create a backdust in its services. After the order, for considerations of compliance with the legislation, Apple temporarily limited the work of the Advanced Data Protection function for British users, which ensures complete encryption of data in the cloud.
American lawmakers and cybersecurity experts warned that the emergence of technical vulnerability to the government will inevitably lead to the fact that attackers will be able to use this access. Direct access to encrypted data could also create a precedent that other countries would use, including modes with a low level of human rights protection.
