Lawrence Klein from South California filed a lawsuit against Microsoft to the Sen-Diego Supreme Court due to the company’s decision to stop supporting Windows 10 from October 14, 2025. Klein has two laptops with Windows 10, which will be outdated after this date. The plaintiff claims that Microsoft forces users to buy new devices for working with AI applications such as Copilot, available only in Windows 11.
According to the portal Tom’s Hardware, update to Windows 11 is free, but it is impossible for millions of devices without TPM 2.0 (cryptography), and this is necessarily for all future versions of Windows. There is a way to get around this, but without official support and technical assistance.
Individuals can extend support for a year for $ 30 through the ESU program requiring Microsoft’s account. This is not suitable for those who refuse to update due to mandatory registration.
Many are forced to buy new equipment, but some offer to switch to Linux. Klein demands that Microsoft support Windows 10 free until its share in the market falls below 10%. If the court satisfies his lawsuit, this can lead to additional expenses for the company and postponement of Windows 11.
It is noteworthy that Windows 11 overtook Windows 10 according to the number of users only this year, probably due to the upcoming termination of support.
