Information appeared that Samsung is working on the creation of new metallized lenses that will make smartphones and virtual reality glasses thinner and more convenient. For this, Samsung collaborates with the University of Science and Technology (Postech) in South Korea. The new technology is called Metalens.
A joint article by Samsung engineers and Postech specialists is published in the NATURE Communications scientific journal. According to the Gizmochina portal, these lenses are made of metal and consist of very small nanostructures that are thinner than the human hair. They help the light pass through the lens, improving its work. Researchers have created a method that allows lenses to work better and be stronger. This made it possible to make lenses thinner and easier in production.
Due to this, the cameras steel by about 20% thinner – from 2 mm to 1.6 mm.
The team also showed how the technology works with virtual reality glasses. Experts used an infrared chamber, which can accurately track eye movements and recognize the iris of the eye. The image has become more clear, which improved the quality of the glasses.
Samsung intends to use this technology for cameras in ordinary smartphones. This will help reduce the size of the cameras and remove their protrusions on the telephone housing.
