Specialists of the University of Georgia released information about the meteor falling to the ground at the end of July. This was reported by the portal Space.com.
The meteor fell to Earth on July 26, the mass of the object is 23 grams. When falling, the meteor struck the roof of a residential building in the USA, in the state of Georgia, and partially damaged the floor. As a result of a detailed analysis, the researchers came to the conclusion that these are chondrites are the most commonly encountered category of meteorites.
Experts found that the chemical composition of the meteor corresponds to the composition of the solar matter, which suggests that its age exceeds the age of the earth.
A researcher from the University of Georgia Scott Harris noted that this meteorite belongs to the group of objects located in the asteroid belt located between Mars and Jupiter. According to him, these objects were allegedly formed due to the collapse of a much larger asteroid about 470 million years ago.
According to preliminary estimates of experts, the age of this meteorite can reach 4.5 billion years. The find is atypical, since usually meteorites of this size do not pose a threat to the earth’s surface, since they completely burn out in the atmosphere of the Earth.
Researchers plan to conduct a comprehensive study of the object and further expose it as an exhibit at the Tedlusville Scientific Museum in Cartersville.
