In 2024, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipsets family. This year, different technological “informants” reported that the processor, under the code name SM8550, which was initially called the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, or 8 Elite Gen 2, was renamed Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. This was paid attention to by insiders from Android Authority, Chinese reported also about this Digital Chat Station Insider.
Insiders note that this nomenclature is unusual, since the Snapdragon 8 Elite was released only last year. In addition, reports from various sources also say that there is another nomenclature, SM8445, which is precisely the Snapdragon 8 of the 5th generation. The confusion has occurred, most likely because now Qualcomm is preparing for the release of Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2, but 8 Elite Gen 5 is planned. This generation can become a strategic step for the integration of these processors into one family.
According to insiders, conflicting information came from different sources, as a result, different models of one family – one of which so far in theory – confused, presenting as one device under different names.
According to rumors, Snapdragon 8 of the 5th generation is a high-class flagship equipped with Oryon user nuclei and 3-nm TSMC process. At the same time, there are no plans for SM8835, which, according to the logic of Qualcomm, could be called Snapdragon 8s Gen 5.
