Donald Trump announced his intention to introduce 100% of the duty on the import of semiconductors if they are produced outside the country. An exception is planned to be made for companies investing in production in the United States, the media explained.
Semic conductors are microchips that are used in smartphones, computers, gaming prefixes, medical devices and solar panels. They are made mainly from silicon and can carry out electricity or isolate it, which allows them to control the operation of electronics.
Most of the world chips are produced in Asia. The leader is Taiwanese TSMC, supplying chips for Apple, NVIDIA and Microsoft. The second place is occupied by South Korea with Samsung and SK Hynix, especially strong in memory. The United States also has its manufacturers, for example Intel, but want to expand domestic production.
According to experts, duties can lead to an increase in electronics price or deliveries delay if the company is in a hurry to transfer production. However, the largest manufacturers, such as Apple, Samsung and SK Hynix, are likely to avoid new taxes thanks to their factories in the United States.
