Microsoft opened the source code of Basic

06.09.2025

There were a long time 8-bit computers of the 1970s, which were launched right in the Basic interpreter, without the usual modern operating systems. One of the most popular Basic suppliers was Microsoft then. Their versions were used in computers of Commodore, Apple and many others. Now Microsoft has made version 1.1 Basic for the 6502 processor open under the MIT license.

This version dates from the mid-1978 and supports Commodore Pet, KIM-1 and early Apple models.

The version was known to the community before, but now you can use it legally, without questions of licensing, the media write. Moreover, this is not the first time that Microsoft surprises the public with the discovery of old products (recently there was an update of MS-DOS), and therefore not the last.
