Russia offered to use nuclear technologies for waste processing

06.09.2025

Scientists of the National Research University MEPhI proposed the use of nuclear technologies in the field of waste processing. The initiative was represented by the Scientific and Technical Council of the Russian Ecological Operator.

Ionizing radiation can be used to neutralize medical waste, disinfection of wastewater, processing agricultural waste and the disposal of polymeric materials. The method is based on the destruction of chemical ties in organic compounds under the influence of gamma and electronic irradiation.

This allows you to destroy pathogenic microorganisms, decompose persistent pollutants and reduce the hazard class of waste. For example, radiation processed by radiation become suitable for use as a feed base in animal husbandry.

The Scientific and Technical Council of the Russian Ecological Operator, working since 2020, considers this proposal as a potential alternative to traditional processing methods.
