In the past, a type of suture thread called «catgut» was made from animal intestines.
It was produced from collagen extracted mainly from sheep and sometimes pig intestines. These sutures would dissolve on their own in the body, so they didn’t need to be removed.
In modern medicine, however, synthetic absorbable sutures are more commonly used. They are safer, stronger, and carry a lower risk of infection.
