OpenAI takes a new step in India

19.02.2026

One of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies — OpenAI — has signed an agreement with one of India’s largest technology and industrial conglomerates, Tata Group, to build a new 100‑megawatt AI data center in the country. This project is particularly significant as it will become OpenAI’s first major infrastructure investment in India.

According to reports, the new data center will have the capacity to run OpenAI’s most advanced models — including large language models and generative technologies — at high speed. This marks a new chapter in the development of India’s artificial intelligence ecosystem.

Next goal — 1 gigawatt of AI infrastructure

OpenAI’s leadership notes that India’s technology market is growing rapidly and the country is becoming one of the world’s largest data‑processing hubs. In this context, the company plans to expand its data center capacity to 1 gigawatt in the future.

This step is important not only from a technological standpoint but also economically, as India is currently one of the fastest‑growing markets for IT and cloud services.

Partnership with Tata — a strategic choice

Tata Group owns India’s largest telecommunications and IT infrastructure. Therefore, OpenAI’s decision to choose this company as a partner is unsurprising.

The new data center will be built with: • high energy efficiency, • advanced cooling technologies, • the highest security standards.

The project could become a major milestone in India’s transformation into a global hub for artificial intelligence development.

Global AI competition intensifies

OpenAI’s investment in India demonstrates how rapidly global demand for AI infrastructure is growing. While the United States, Europe, China and Japan invest billions in massive data centers, India is actively joining this race.

The new project is significant not only technologically but also politically and economically, strengthening India’s position on the global AI map.
