Turkmenistan Constructs Three New Transborder Fiber-Optic Communication Routes

01.03.2026

Turkmenistan is modernizing its telecommunications infrastructure: by 2028, the number of international fiber-optic communication lines will reach 11. The Ministry of Communications of Turkmenistan is implementing a large-scale program aimed at the digital transformation of the economy. Within the framework of the State Program for 2026–2028, the construction of new transborder fiber-optic highways is planned.

The Ministry of Communications of Turkmenistan is working on two main directions for the development of international connectivity. The first direction involves the construction of the “Arkadagyň Ak ýoly bilen Serhetabat – Hyrat” fiber-optic communication line. This project will allow for an increase in the volume of transit data flows and provide access to India’s telecommunications services market.

The second strategic project is being implemented in cooperation with Azerbaijan: “Turkmentelekom” and “Azertelekom” are laying an underwater fiber-optic cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea. Simultaneously, the construction of terrestrial highways is underway along the Etrek – Incheburun and Bekdash – Temirbaba routes.

The implementation of these projects will increase the number of international fiber-optic connections from eight to eleven and significantly enhance the throughput capacity of the national data transmission system. Turkmenistan is strengthening its position in the Central Asian region as a key information and communication bridge between East and West, North and South.
