Writing with a pencil, thinking with the heartThe enduring art of Khemra Shirov

15.03.2026

In 2025, a landmark literary event celebrated the lifetime achievements of Khemra Shirov with the publication of a monumental 28-volume collection of his works. The extensive edition brings together the remarkable breadth of Shirov’s creative output; three novels, around thirty short stories, more than three hundred miniatures, and nearly one hundred plays, along with poetry, children’s literature, screenplays, and numerous journalistic essays. Two volumes compile his writings that were published in Russian over the decades, while another two present a selection of his articles written in Turkmen, Russian, and English, reflecting the multilingual reach of his literary voice.

What makes this collection particularly extraordinary is not only its scale but also the unique creative process behind it. Every text included in the series was written entirely by hand with a sharpened pencil, never typed. Even in an era dominated by computers and digital technology, Shirov has remained faithful to the simple method he adopted in childhood, putting his thoughts directly onto paper. For him, the physical act of writing is inseparable from the rhythm of thinking and imagination.

At the age of seventy-five, Shirov continues to display remarkable vitality and creative energy. Reflecting on his lifelong dedication to literature, he often emphasizes that inspiration is never far away. “Interesting ideas do not need to be chased they exist everywhere around us. Life itself is the greatest source of inspiration,” he says.

Shirov’s literary journey began remarkably early. At just ten years old, he started composing poetry. Growing up in a large rural household with nearly ten children, books and literary pursuits were not initially considered essential. Yet the young poet’s lively and humorous verses quickly attracted the attention of editors at children’s magazines. His poems began appearing in print, and before long he became something of a local celebrity in his village. Gradually, even his once-skeptical parents came to admire his talent and encouraged his growing passion for writing.
Throughout his career, Shirov has returned repeatedly to several central themes of peace and friendship, love for one’s homeland, devotion to family, and the beauty of nature, that form the moral and emotional core of his work. These universal subjects have inspired countless writers, yet Shirov approaches them with a distinctive originality that gives his work a fresh and recognizable voice.

One of his most notable achievements is his pioneering role in avant-garde poetry in Turkmenistan. Shirov introduced innovative poetic forms such as shaped poems, acrostics, and verse-grams, blending visual structure with linguistic expression. These experimental creations, often referred to as neo-poetic forms, have become influential enough to be studied in school curricula and university philology programs. Their originality also gained international recognition when they were presented and honored as a distinctive artistic movement at a major world exhibition in Germany.
