As part of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Global Project “Global Programme for Supporting the Update of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and the Preparation of the 7th National Report on the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD),” funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, a series of workshops were held in the administrative centers of the country’s velayats from April 27 to May 12, 2026.
The consultations brought together representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, other key national ministries and agencies of Turkmenistan, local authorities, the scientific community, managers of specially protected natural areas, as well as representatives of the private sector and civil society.
The workshops focused on consultations to support the preparation of Turkmenistan’s Seventh National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity, as well as discussions on the priorities of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and mechanisms for monitoring its implementation. Particular attention was given to the development of national targets and objectives for 2026–2030 and their alignment with the GBF, as well as to the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits.
One of the key objectives of the workshops was to gather feedback, comments, and proposals from regional experts and stakeholders, which will inform the final document.
“We presented national biodiversity targets and objectives directly linked to the update of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. This will enable Turkmenistan to follow global directions while preserving the uniqueness of its natural ecosystems,” noted Jumamurad Saparmuradov, National CBD Coordinator.
The preparation of the Seventh National Report is a strategic task aimed at assessing Turkmenistan’s progress in achieving the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The report will serve as a key document reflecting the effectiveness of national efforts to conserve biodiversity through 2030.
