Researchers at the University of Cambridge, together with biodesigner Lucia Hiron, have presented prototypes of a new biosell system that generates electricity using living blue-green algae.
The technology, known as biophotovoltaics, is based on photosynthesis, allowing algae to produce electrical energy. The organisms require only sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to operate. This innovation could help reduce dependence on traditional batteries and environmentally harmful materials.
Scientists say the technology has already been tested for several years. Biosells have been used to power devices such as electronic clocks, temperature sensors, and smart systems for monitoring indoor plants.
At present, the new battery is limited to low-power devices. However, researchers believe that biophotovoltaics could become a promising direction for developing environmentally friendly energy sources in the future.
