An unusual sleep competition will be held in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. Participants will sleep for 90 minutes at the same time, and the winner will be determined based on a special «sleep index».
To calculate the index, special sensors will collect data on participants’ sleep depth and quality, how quickly they fall asleep, and the stability of their sleep.
The main prize will be 2.22 million yen (approximately 14,400 US dollars). Special awards such as the «Deep Sleep Award» and the «Acrobatic Flip» category will also be presented.
In addition, participants will receive a randomly selected «sleep gift». However, the exact nature of this gift has not yet been revealed. Intentionally staying awake all night before the competition or arriving sleep-deprived in order to gain an advantage is prohibited.
The event will take place on October 5, 2026. Organizers plan to hold three competition sessions with around 20 participants in each group. Participation is free, and applications will be accepted until September 16. The organizers aim to raise awareness about the issue of sleep deprivation in Japan. The country is considered one of the nations with the lowest average sleep duration in the world.
