On August 31, a signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding on environmental protection was held via videoconference between the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The document was signed by the Minister of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, Ovezgeldi Goshjanov, and the Regional Director of WWF for East, Central Asia, and the Pacific, Jean-Paul Paddack. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
This Memorandum is aimed at further strengthening long-term cooperation in preserving biodiversity, protecting natural ecosystems and rare species, and increasing resilience to climate change impacts. The document provides for the formulation of a joint plan of projects and activities for 2026–2030.
The partners identified key priorities, including wildlife protection, improving the system of specially protected natural areas, and restoring populations of rare fauna and flora species such as the Persian leopard, kulan, Bukhara deer, goitered gazelle, and Amu Darya sturgeon. Special attention will also be paid to developing ecological corridors, enhancing environmental education, and exchanging scientific knowledge and best practices.
The framework of cooperation envisages strengthening transboundary conservation ties with Central Asian countries and attracting necessary resources for joint projects. The adoption of this document marks an important step forward in Turkmenistan’s international cooperation toward environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and bolstering ecological diplomacy in the region.
