The new coin was issued to mark the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States. It is intended for everyday circulation rather than commemorative purposes.
One side of the coin features a portrait of current US President Donald Trump, along with the inscriptions “Liberty” and “In God We Trust”. The other side displays the US presidential seal with the number 250 on the shield.
According to the US Mint, the coin reflects the nation’s spirit, pride and heritage during the 250th anniversary celebrations. The United States had not featured the image of a living person on its currency for nearly 100 years. Therefore, the decision has sparked strong criticism, as such an honour is traditionally reserved for deceased statesmen.
